Tahini Chocolate Chip Cookies

For my birthday this summer, my mother brought me to Edge of the Woods in New Haven, CT, to peruse their bakeshop’s vegan offerings. Among them were giant tahini chocolate chip cookies. The sesame flavor wasn’t bold, but made for a rich, well-rounded cookie. I left determined to make my own iteration.

It only takes one bite of chocolate halva to know that chocolate and tahini were meant to be paired. The raw cookie dough, with its dark, nutty sweetness, is reminiscent of this sesame confection, and would be great thrown in a batch of cookie dough ice cream.
Baking turns the rich dough into soft cookies with a slightly crunchy exterior. The tahini flavor is subtle, but definitely present. As long as you’re not a hardcore tahini-hater, I’d say these would make a perfectly good, if slightly sophisticated, stand-in for chocolate chip cookies.
Tahini Chocolate Chip Cookies
Yields 3 dozen 2″ cookies
2/3 c dark brown sugar
2/3 c granulated sugar
5 tbsp soy margarine, softened
1 c tahini
½ c applesauce
½ tsp light corn syrup
3 c flour
1½ tsp baking soda
8 oz chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, add all ingredients in order, blending after each addition. Drop 1″ balls of batter onto lightly greased cookie sheets. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until slightly golden. (Though they won’t look completely done, don’t overbake unless you want crunchy cookies, as they harden a bit while cooling.) Best enjoyed warm.

I was just thinking I needed something like a chocolate chip cookie, but a little more sophisticated, to add to my holiday cookie baking list. These look yummy!
I’m speechless. As you know, chocolate and tahini are two of my favorite things in the world, and I never once thought of pairing them. This is a dream come true.
These look so freaking delicious and I’m dying to try them but.. I’m making a different cookie today. But soon.. I haven’t had chocolate chip cookies in months and I haven’t had HOMEMADE chocolate chip cookies in probably.. almost a year. So yes, I just want to rip those out of the screen. :3
Just made these and they are sooo good… even though I forgot the baking soda.
I’ve already had 5….. Must. Stay. Away. From. Cookies.
Ok, I just made 1/2 batch of these for a small potluck I’m headed to in an hour and half…and i already ate 6 these. I going to have to do something to keep myself from eating any more. They’re so addicting!
