Zines were a big part of my life for a long time. I helped run a zine library in college, a zine distro after college, and the Philly Zine Fest for three years, so let’s just say I’ve gotten my hands on a ton of food-related zines over the years! As it’s the last full week of Vegan Month of Food VI (congrats, bloggers!) I thought this would be a good time to give away some zines from my stash.
One lucky winner will receive the following loot:
- The Frugal Vegan’s Harvest & Holiday Survival Guide I and II. Lisa‘s zines have long held a special place in my heart, and were in heavy rotation years ago when I was first getting into urban homesteading. These two zines are jam-packed with over 100 recipes (including my favorite vegan french toast!), loads of cheap, DIY food and non-food gift ideas, and even some recipes for vegan dog and cat treats. They’re great resources for keeping cozy and having fun during the winter months.
- Radical Mycology: An SLF Primer. This one is all about mushrooms: identifying them in the wild, cultivating them, using them for food and non-food applications, and even a recipe for mushroom ketchup. (You can also download a PDF of this zine and learn more about the folks who made it here!)
- Wild Fermentation: A Do-It-Yourself Guide to Cultural Manipulation. Years before he was a published author, made moronic commentary on about “humane” meat, and became the subject of a satirical song by the greatest band ever, Sandor Katz put out this zine, which got me hooked on making my own sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles, sourdough, and even yogurt. Despite a few pages on dairy products, there’s lots of useful info in here that will be of interest to folks new to fermentation.
- A compilation zine made for Philly’s 2007 Love Your Body Day (inspiring, body-positive stuff for folks of all genders), a couple of sweet 1″ cupcake pins, and whatever else I feel like throwing in!
To enter, just leave a comment below with the name of your favorite vegan zine (or cookbook, if you don’t know any zines). Be sure to include an e-mail address I can use to contact you. I’ll randomly pick a winner after 12PM EST on Friday, September 27th. Giveaway is closed! Congrats, winners!
And if you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know about them already, you should check out some of the amazing zinesters around the vegan blogosphere — Kittee of Cake Maker to the Stars, Amy over at Vegan Eats and Treats, Katie of Don’t Eat off the Sidewalk are three, and I’m guessing there are a dozen more of you out there that I don’t even know about. Be sure to say hello if you’re one of them!

Whoa! Very cool how involved you are! I’ve made zines since high school but only in the last couple years have been distributing my own. I go to zine fests only every once in a while when they’re nearby so I’d love a chance to see other vegan food zines!
my favorite is probably Amey’s (VE&T) because I love all her doodles and it’s so nicely laid out. Didn’t know Katie made one too, though. I’ll have to check that out.

Thanks for outing yourself here! I’ll have to check out Marmalade Umlaut. And Amey’s art/aesthetic is definitely awesome!

Best zine hands down: Papa Tofu Loves Ethiopian Food. By Kittee Berns. If you don’t have it now, get it!
She also just announced a cookbook in the works – if the zine is an adequate precursor, we are in for some delicious Ethiopian eats!

Oh wow – I cannot tell you how happy a zine-centric email popping up in my inbox just made me! Having been a teenager during the Riot Grrrl heyday, zines were a HUGE part of my adolescent/early adult (adult? whaa?!) life. Even though I was veg back then (as I still am now), I don’t recall being into or knowing any food-based zines, though (the ones I made/read were mostly music, feminism, general teen angst, art…veg food would’ve fit in well but somehow I missed that connection!). It’s been a long time since I’ve been involved or had the opportunity to read new zines, so I’m stoked that you mentioned Philly Zine Fest – I’m local so I’ll have to check it out! As for veg titles, my current favorite is “Heaven’s Banquet: Vegetarian Cooking for Lifelong Health the Ayurveda Way” by Miriam Kasin Hospodar. Thanks so much for this inspiring post!

Jeez, thanks for this awesome comment! I agree that there seem to have been far fewer cookzines in years past. I always loved randomly finding recipes in fanzines and perzines when I was a kid. Definitely check out Philly Zine Fest — it was always a large and fun event, and was a great way to keep up on current happenings and meet folks who are still stoked on zines. I’m unfamiliar with Heaven’s Banquet, but I’ll have to track it down!

My favorite vegan zine was created by Malloreigh and Kaylie at Vegan Mischief. It’s called “Vegan Mischief Xmas 2010 Cookzine.” I do not know if they made any others. For some reason even though I am vegan and love zines, i never thought about putting the two together, so i’m looking forward to tracking some down. Hooray!
